Dear Blog: 7/24/2020

Cash and I started off our weekend with a great evening! First, he got a hoof trim and had his front shoes reset. I opted to keep his back hooves bare since there is minimal chipping despite all the riding we do.

After his hooves were all spiffed up, we headed out for a ride. The evening cooled off to a perfect temperature. We rode down the creek farther than we ever have. Instead of turning around and going out where we came in, I decided to see how Cash would handle the bank. I found the lowest spot and he walked up it like it was nothing! We’ll definitely be looking for new challenges on the next ride.

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and how you do it.”

After that, we did some trot and canter work along a ditch that runs through a field. His trot has slowed enough to be comfortable, and he no longer tries to sprint when I ask him to lope. Every ride shows more progress and it makes my heart happy.

The ride was just under 4 miles total. I couldn’t have asked for a better ride or more beautiful scenery. Enjoy a few of the views we saw!

Until next time,

Happy trails.

  1. Lovely photos! So glad you are getting to enjoy your horse again. It can take some time to solve the puzzle of why a horse is acting unhappy, can’t it? I always ask myself are my horses physically uncomfortable somewhere in their body and/or are they not feeling safe for some reason or am I handling them in a way that is adding to the problem? Maybe it was some combination of your getting Cash those front shoes, your persistence in continuing to work with him and time in allowing him to settle into a new living situation? Whatever the reason for the turn around, I hope you continue to have many more happy trails together! Our horses are so worth our efforts, and it is such a pleasure to be able to enjoy life with them.

    1. It definitely feels like a puzzle at times! Cash has had more vet, dental, and chiropractic appointments in the last year than most people have!
I’m so glad I can finally go out and enjoy him anytime. Just today we loaded up the trailer and went on a solo trail ride. 6 months ago I would have said no way could we have done that…alone! Blog and pictures to come from our beautiful ride today.
